Country Life: Losing a Pet

Yesterday we celebrated Capt. M’s 6th birthday with his first friends party. It was a special day for him since we had never invited his school friends over before. We were all in cleaning, decorating ans set up mode down to the last few minutes before people were due to arrive.

About ten minutes before the first guest arrived, Capt. M burst into the house out of breath. “Mom, one of the chickens just couldn’t make it.”

“What buddy? What are you saying?”

Capt. M “She didn’t make it mom. She is dead.”

Oh no! My heart sank. This is the first pet that the boys had seen dead. I didn’t know how they would handle it. Plus we had to figure out what to do with her as fast as possible.

We have had this hen for 2.5 years. She had been acting odd the last few days but we figured it was just because she was molting. Our dog Clemens actually discovered that the chicken had passed. Once he found her, he sat there and barked until Capt. M came. It was apparent that she had been gone for several hours.

The boys handled the loss fairly well. Mr. B wasn’t convinced that the chicken was dead. We assured him that she was at peace.

It was just minutes later that the first child arrived. This was a good distraction for the boys. We are so thankful the chicken was discovered before our yard was full of children.

As hubby says, it’s the circle of life. Dealing with the loss of animals is something the boys will have to get used to living in the country.
