Country Life: Vegetable Garden Plans

As the snow came down yesterday here in Central Virginia, I was thinking of Spring! I spent a couple of hours planning out our vegetable garden! We plan on using mostly organic seeds this year instead of buying plants. That means that we have to be organized and be ready to start seedlings early. Hubby is building a little greenhouse too.

The first step was researching what we wanted to grow. I then made a list of what month the items needed to be planted. In the month of March we will start Kale, Spinach, Lettuce, Peas and Broccoli. In May we will start Green beans, Cucumbers, Summer Spinach, Muskmelon, Peppers, Squash and Tomatoes. Of course some of those May vegetables will be started earlier in the greenhouse.

I also researched seed companies. For the majority of my seeds I ordered from a local company called Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. The reason I ordered local is most of the seeds they carry grow great in my region! Plus they have mostly organic seeds. For the items that Southern Exposure did not have I ordered from Territorial Seed Company since I had their book.

I did a lot of research on what varieties to grow- reading all of the descriptions carefully. There are so many varieties of tomatoes that it was an exhausting process! I used the seed books, my Vegetable Gardener’s Bible and Google to help me make decisions. And of course sometimes I just guessed! Spring can’t come soon enough!

Have you started planning your vegetable garden? What are you planning to grow this year?
