Test if Egg is Fresh

Did you know that store bought eggs can be eaten well past their sell by date? Also farm fresh eggs can potentially last for months in the fridge. There is a simple test that can be done to determine if an egg is bad or still fresh. First of all, make sure that the shell is intact. Also smell the egg; your nose is a good indicator of a rotten egg!

Fill a bowl with cold water that is deep enough to cover the egg. Place one egg in the bowl of water. If the egg sinks, it is still fresh. If the egg floats, it is bad. If the egg stands on one end, it is still okay to eat but should be eaten very soon.

So how does this test work?

There is an air sack in each egg. As the egg ages, the air sack increases. Thus the egg will float if the air sack has increased in size indicating a bad egg.
