Life With Boys: Encouraging Adventurous Eaters

The one thing I did not expect from my juicing adventure is how much it would impact my boys. They have become much more adventurous in trying new produce as I bring home things like swiss chard, bok choy, kale and beets. Mr. B, age 4, is the most adventurous.

As I was preparing my juice over the weekend, Mr. B says “I am going to eat this whole thing!”

I look over to see him grab a huge swiss chard leaf and start chomping away. He ended up eating about half of that big leaf before moving onto spinach! It turns out he likes parsley too! The bok choy didn’t go over so well but I was proud that he tried it.

So how do I get him to try these new vegetables?

Really I don’t have to do much. All I need to do is bring the produce home and start washing and preparing it. I found that if I allow my boys to help in the process, they are more likely to try something new. I also found that if I don’t ask them to try it, they are more likely to try it on their own. Once I start saying “try this” they hesitate and give me the “I know your trying to pull something on me” look.

Lead by example. I try the produce and they want to follow suit.

Be adventurous with your kids. Just a few months ago Mr. B was a very picky eater; never wanting to try a new food. So even if your kids are picky, keep trying. Take them to the store and let them pick out what produce they want to try. Get them involved and soon enough they will be trying new foods too. They may not always like what they try, but it is setting them up for a well rounded palate.

(By the way, my boys go shirtless as much as I let them. Now that the weather is warming, it is going to be a challenge to keep them clothed!)
