Many of us are on tight budgets and looking for ways to cut our grocery bill. One area that some American’s should focus on is food waste. MSNBC recently published an article talking about how 30 to 50 percent of the world’s food is gone to waste.

“The average American throws away 33 pounds of food each month — about $40 worth”

Wow! That’s a lot of food!

I know that I am guilty of not using the fresh produce before it spoils. But I can’t imagine throwing away 33 pounds of food each month. We do eat our leftovers and I often do leftover makeovers in our menu plan. If food does start to go bad, we feed it to our chickens.

If you do find that a lot of food is going to waste in your family try the following:

  • Package food into small portions and freeze what you are not going to use immediately.
  • Buy smaller amounts of fresh produce and meat.
  • Use a foodsaver to freeze your meat and produce so it doesn’t get freezer burn.
  • Create a menu plan. Planning your meals helps use the food resources you have.
  • Instead of having leftovers, reinvent your leftovers! Don’t have the same meal- make something different out of your leftovers to make it more exciting.

What are your tips for preventing food waste?
