Brown town chicks

The baby chicks are here right on schedule! I had marked Tuesday in my calendar as an estimate for hatch date. Tuesday evening we had two chicks hatch! By Wednesday morning we had four chicks. The last live chick hatched Wednesday night. They are so cute and fuzzy!

We did have some tragedies. We had two chicks that died shortly after hatching. Both of these chicks had intestinal prolapse. From what I have read, it was either from the eggs not being rotated or from too high of an incubation temperature. Since our Brown Town was sitting on nine eggs, we are guessing that it was too many for her. Maybe she missed rotating some of the eggs? They need to be rotated daily. Whatever the case, it was a sad event. Capt. M had the toughest time as he doesn’t deal well with death. He has such a tender heart for animals.

The last two eggs never hatched. They died somewhere along the way for unknown reason. It is very rare for a 100% hatch rate so I was expecting we would loose some.

We are enjoying watching our five beautiful chicks! They love to hop on momma’s back! We continued to be impressed by Brown Town’s excellent mothering skills. She is a natural! Watching her teach the chicks how to eat is so neat! She continues to make sure they get food before she does.
