Heartfelt Holidays: Decoupage

heartfelt holiday

Several years ago I participated in a small craft show with my mom. One of the crafts I made was decoupage plates. This year I am decoupaging again! It is really easy and I find it enjoyable too. Decoupage is simply gluing paper to an object. Today I am just sharing a simple decoupage project but I have plans to turn this simple plate into something more.

Decoupage Supplies

Decoupage Supplies

Glass Plate (or other item)
Mod Podge (or the generic brand)
Foam Brush
Paper
Acrylic Sealer Finish Spray

A great place to look for glassware is the thrift store. I found this glass plate at GoodWill for $0.95. Wash and dry the glassware. Lay out the paper on the glass and determine what patten you want. I have just torn the pieces of paper and arranged overlapping each other and I have laid them out in an exact pattern.

mod podge on glass

Spread the mod podge on the glass and then apply the paper. I did one strip down the middle and then overlaid the side pieces. To help prevent ripping of the paper, just place mod podge on the glass until you get all of the paper applied. Gently use your fingers to press out any bubbles.

Spread mod podge

Spread mod podge over the top of the paper. You want to cover the whole surface. Let it dry and apply another coat or two. In total I do three coats. After the final coat of mod podge is dry, apply an acrylic sealer to protect your project.

This was a really quick decoupage job just to give you an idea. I don’t really like how it turned out- I would have liked the middle to be a little different- but you get the idea!

candle on plate

Place a candle on the plate, wrap in cellophane with a pretty bow and you have a perfect teacher’s gift! The candle above is a soy candle my mom made- another homemade idea!

Tips

  • The plate I used had a lip around the edge. After the first coat of mod podge was dry I took sharp scissors around the edge to cut off the extra paper and make s smooth edge. An exacto knife would be better than scissors!
  • If you mess up or your paper tears, you can start over by running the glass under hot water before the glue dries. Believe me, this works (yes, I messed up on this plate!)
  • If you are making a decoupage plate to serve food on, I decoupage from underneath the plate. Just turn the plate over and make sure the print side goes against the glass.
