Heartfelt Holidays: Renewed Crayons

heartfelt holiday

Mr. B came home from his sitters house the other day with some molded crayons. His sitter had recycled old crayons and made them into Christmas tree shapes! I loved the idea so we made some of our own this weekend. This is a very easy project and a great way to recycle.

broken crayons

Gather broken crayons and peel the paper off. Cheap crayons work really well for this project. Even the ones that you get free at restaurants. The Crayola crayon labels are a lot harder to get off. I found a razor blade helped- just slice down the length of the crayon and peel the label.

Place crayons in a muffin tin or a metal mold pan. We used a heart shaped pan and a muffin tin. Place crayons in a single layer. You can sort the colors or make a mixture like we did.

Place the filled muffin tin or mold into a preheated 350 degree oven for about 10-15 minutes.

melted crayon

Once the crayons have melted, carefully remove the tin from the oven. Let it cool on a flat surface until solid. Place the tin or mold in the freezer for about 5 minutes and the molded crayons should pop out easily. You can also use a knife along the edge to pop them out.

Recycled Crayons

These turned out really cute! Note that the “top” side will not mark on paper well. You will notice that the crayon separates a bit and the wax will rise to the surface.

I thought these would make cute gifts for young kids and could also be stocking stuffers. Parents, you could make these after the kids go to sleep and package them for the stocking!
