Growing Scallions in Water

Did you know that you can grow scallions right in your kitchen window? You don’t have to have a green thumb to grow these green onions either! Simply take store bought scallions and place them in water. Set them in your windowsill and you will see the roots growing within just a couple of days.

When you want to use scallions in a recipe, just clip the green part of the scallion off. Make sure to leave a good couple of inches of green stem left for new growth.

Green oinion roots

See the little green shoot in the picture above? That is a new shoot that started just a couple of days after I placed these guys in water. I actually have too many scallions in this one glass and need to separate them to allow for proper root growth.

Change the water every couple of days too. I also trim the brown edges as sometimes you will get a shoot that dies off.

It’s pretty neat to have renewable green onions on hand!
