It’s the middle of summer- are your kids bored yet? Here are some ideas to keep your kids cool and entertained right in your backyard.

  • If you have a plastic slide on a playset, turn on the hose and make a water slide. Hubby sprays the slide as the kids go down.
  • Fill buckets of water and let the kids play. Kids love to fill-up plastic containers and measuring cups. Transferring water back and forth is one of Mr. B’s favorite activities.
  • Set up tents and have a camp out in your backyard. We have yet to do this with our boys but when I was growing up we camped in our backyard a lot!
  • Make S’mores. We have a fire pit in our yard but you can use a grill to roast marshmallows too.
  • Catch fireflies. My boys had a blast catching fireflies for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We used Mason jars to contain them. Fireflies are slow fliers- both boys were able to catch them easily.
  • Get out the sports equipment. We dug out the croquet set and bocce balls when visiting our relatives recently. A new game for us was Ladderball– it was fun for adults and kids! Of course there are the usual games- frisbee, wiffle ball, soccer and golf. Yes, my boys gold around our yard!

What do you do to keep your kids entertained in your backyard?
