Organized Room to Room: The Kitchen

Organized Kitchen

I am so impressed with Litsa’s kitchen! Just look at those countertops- clean! Honestly, I can’t stand cluttered countertops. However, I am the worst about piling items and saying “I’ll do that later”. With hubby home now, hopefully we can gain organization again. For now, learn some tips from Litsa.

As a stay at home mom, I must say the kitchen is the most used room in our house! We eat breakfast, lunch, & dinner in there seven days a week——–in addition to snacks, coffee breaks, & more. We only eat out on special occasions. Thus, I like to maintain order in the kitchen on a daily basis! Once a friend asked me what was missing from the kitchen window seal. I told her it was probably a bottle of Windex. It stays on the counter or in the window seal more than it does under the counter! I use it endlessly throughout the day. Here are my kitchen organization tidbits:

Kitchen Countertops

Catch-all counter

The kitchen’s countertops contain only what is used on a daily basis (minus very few decorative items that I like to display in the corners): Coffeemaker, sugar, coffee, paper towel holder, a bowl of fresh nuts (for snacking)! However, our backdoor is just feet away from the one corner in the kitchen that becomes the “catch-all” and that’s just part of life (groceries that come in, preschool papers/backpacks, shopping lists, etc). If the entire kitchen can be organized while utilizing it and after main meals, I can live with that one catch-all spot until I can get to it. As I clean the kitchen and reorganize, I move all items to that one corner. Then, everything gets placed back in its rightful place or gets purged (trash, mission bag, or other).

Kitchen Island

My kitchen island is invisible. My “contractor” husband has yet to build it so it’s not a command center in our home yet. Let us know how your kitchen island serves your family’s needs/lifestyle. And how do you organize that work space in your kitchen?

Kitchen Table

organized kitchen

Not only is our kitchen table used for eating but it’s a place for crafts, puzzles, a workspace for How to Have it All, and more. Thus, I strive to keep only the condiments we use daily in the center of the table: Olive oil, red wine vinegar, balsamic Vinegar, salt, & pepper. Several times throughout the day and especially after meals, I strive to place everything in its rightful spot and wipe down the tabletop.

Kitchen Drawers/Cabinets

We have one junk drawer and the rest of our cabinets/drawers have specific items in them: Utensils, glasses, mugs, plates, etc. Having items neatly organized in their places helps create an organized atmosphere in our busy lives. When we have used items several times and they don’t get back in their proper places, I “Spring Clean” the kitchen drawers/cabinets. This is a corner to corner sweep as if I’m packing our kitchen up for movers and/or a remodel. Everything comes out of the cabinet or drawer. I wipe the inside out with my Windex. And everything gets placed back neatly for everyone’s sanity, even if I’m the only one who notices!

Remember when organizing your kitchen and personalizing it to serve your family’s lifestyle, to create an atmosphere of order but one that works for you. “Spring Clean” this winter so as to enjoy the spring’s rebirth outside in a few months. Remember to purge the clutter: Toss it in the trash, File it for a project or new home within your home, or give it away (I always keep a “Mission Bag” in a closet or my vehicle. When it fills up, I donate it immediately!”!

Allow the space to fit your family’s needs with these organizational tips & others you come across. Share what works for you and how you use your kitchen to meal plan.
