Save More at the Grocery Store: Saving on Produce

One of the hardest places to save on your grocery bill is the produce department. There are not a lot of fresh produce coupons usually. We have already discussed that shopping in season for produce is the best way to save in this department.

Another tip I have is to avoid the prepackaged items. I will give you some examples from my recent shopping trip.

  • The Romaine Hearts Package of 3 was priced at $1.99. A bag of prewashed lettuce was $2.49 and they are only 6-8 oz. Grab a head of lettuce instead of the prebagged salads.
  • Packaged mushrooms are usually in an 8 oz. package priced between $1.99 and $2.29. The bulk bin of mushrooms is $3.69/lb. At first glance you might think $3.69/lb. is more expensive but remember the little packages are only 8 oz. which is a half pound.
  • The regular carrots were $0.92 for 16 oz. The baby carrots are anywhere from $1.20 to $1.99 for 16 oz. Buy the regular size carrots. When you get home, peel them and cut into snack size pieces. Store in water to preserve.

Make small changes, will save you more in the grocery store! It may seem like pennies, but they all add up!
