The New Sports Drink: Green Tea

green tea icedThe heat is on this summer! While you are out in the yard working, swimming in the pool, walking by the beach——-are you drinking!?! Green TEA that is—drinking green tea may just be the new sports drink.

Fitness Magazine (March 2014) issue reported that “Green tea contains metabolism-revving caffeine plus the potent antioxidant EGCG, which activates the sympathetic nervous system to encourage fat burning. In one study, exercisers blasted more fat during a half-hour workout when they consumed tea beforehand. In addition, there is evidence that tea may decrease fat absorption and contribute to weight loss. “Tea is a safe, effective way to increase calorie burn and the release of fat from your fat stores,” says Paul Arciero, Ph.D., the director of the Human Nutrition and Metabolism Laboratory at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. Try one or two cups of green, black or oolong tea—ICED, if you prefer—30 minutes before you sweat!”

The question may resonate within you—Should you buy green tea in a bottle or brew your own!?! I (Litsa) would say to skip the extra sugars and preservatives and brew your own at home. Pour it into a bottle, sweeten with honey, ice it down—and drink up its benefits!

What type of iced teas do you enjoy?

  1. thanks for this post. We love green tea. My husband was just talking about how his grandma use to make sun brewed tea and how he missed it. I’m going to make some this weekend.
