It’s every stockpilers nightmare. The extra freezer went kaput.
Ugh!
Hubby broke the news to me over the phone on my way home from work. Meat was the majority of the contents in the extra freezer. I am always good at scouting out manager’s specials on meat or stockpiling at rock bottom price. I use a foodsaver to package the meat for the freezer. So my heart sank when I heard the news. The ribeye steaks were all I could think about!
Thankfully the items at the bottom of the chest freezer were still frozen or semi-frozen. We saved three ribeye steaks that were completely frozen. Two were partially thawed so we threw them on the grill. Hamburger meat was also partially defrosted so I will be making meatballs or meatloaf muffins this weekend. We were also able to salvage a turkey!
It wasn’t a complete loss, but it was still sickening on the amount of food that we did have to pitch. One ribeye, a lot of chicken, fish, sausage, frozen pancakes, turkey burgers and frozen meals were all thrown out.
Now the research begins on a new freezer! This time I would like an upright freezer so I can actually see what’s int he freezer. Do you have nay tips or recommendations for freezer shopping?

I’d be interested in a synopsis as you research because we are likewise trying to decide on an extra freezer to purchase in order to have the room for freezer meals and stockpiling. We thought about a chest freezer but have come to the same conclusion—How do you see whats in there and get to it?
Hi Ashley,
I will keep you posted on the freezer! It will probably be a few weeks. I did look at some freezers on Friday. The chest freezer was about $100 cheaper but I have no idea how I would get the stuff on the bottom! We are looking for a big freezer this time since we plan on buying a side of beef. Our old chest freezer was small and about 20 years old. Even with it being small, stuff still got lost in the bottom!
I’ve had my power go out several times, but was able to save the food. Last time, we had to replace our electrical panel, so we had no power for about a week. I gave what I could to the neighbors. Great way to do that freezer cleaning you’ve been putting off.

Hi Autumn,
What a positive attitude you have! It would certainly be a test to be without power for a week. Thanks for sharing your story!
