Thrifty Finds: Always vs Never

thrift store find

The last three times that my daughter and I (Litsa) had visited the local thrift stores, I came home feeling defeated. No fun finds! Yet, she always came home with a little toy that filled the playroom (floor)! Or so it seemed……

It’s still winter but the sun shines every so often reminding me that spring is around the corner. And my closet whispers…….it needed to be restocked with items for all seasons and my daughter’s closet only needs two leggings that fit now……..so a retail shopping trip was in order on the next warm day. We found the right day but the retail prices had me standing still—STICKER SHOCK. Even TJMaxx and Ross deals still seemed like pricey finds——when you’re on a tight budget, you watch pennies. After a few great retail buys, we still had a few hours to fill shopping. We opted for Goodwill. It happened to be half price Saturday. The store was packed with people and with GOODS.

The half price Saturday finds were superb. I came home with shoes and clothes—and the daughter had a book and two little toys to tote home too! During our hunt, I discovered Toggery—a made in the USA brand with tags still hanging on the luscious top! The hide and seek shopping list concluded like this: one brand new TOGGERY top, a J.CREW top, Coldwater Creek button up, an INC wrap, 100% linen London Jean pants, The Loft’s grayest of gray new slacks with the tags still in tact ($59.50)—-and four pairs of new boots…Merrell, Aerosoles, Croft & Borrow, & St. John’s Bay—-ten items for $34 bucks total plus the three items for my daughter.

Sometimes the season’s finds are perfect. Other times, the buys are not so great! I concluded that thrifty shopping is rewarding once again—even after three or four trips of not seeing anything. IF your closet needs to be restocked, visit a few thrift stores in addition to retail stores between seasons. Set a budget and look for the deals that fit you, your budget, and your closet!

A thrift store’s goods are always rotating—-sometimes the stock will work in your favor!

Plus remember these tips for purging clothes from the closet!

I really can’t bring myself to buy retail anymore, unless it is somehow cheaper than Goodwill. I have found so many great items. Brand new, vintage, designer, you name it. Not to mention great appliances and housewares.
