Try Something New: Turnips

Turnip

I am really enjoying trying something new in the produce department each week! Sometimes we come across something we all enjoy like jicama or kohlrabi. Other times, we strike out.

None of us had ever tasted turnips before and I thought it was about time that we did!

Roasted Turnip

I roasted the turnips with sweet potatoes for 400 degrees with a splash of olive oil over them. To prepare the turnips, just wash, peel and chop. A turnip is a root vegetable so it takes awhile to cook- 30-40 minutes.

I thought turnips tasted similar like a cross between cauliflower, cabbage and a radish. Unfortunately, no one else liked turnips! Hubby ate them but said I didn’t have to make them again.

You win some, you lose some!

How about you, do you like turnips?

Most people cook them with fatback. I love them just cooked in water with salt and pepper. To me they taste like the core of cabbage, which I think is the best part of cooked cabbage.

    • Hi Andrea!

I am not a southern gal, although I live in Virginia now! I am just learning about how to cook southern food so I have never even heard of fatback! Sounds like it would add flavor but probably calories too! Thanks for your comment!

  2. Hi Nae,
I love your try something new idea. I do attempt to try new stuff (or make old stuff in a different way), but actually making a day of it sounds like more fun. I’m hitting up the farmer’s market tomorrow and am excited to pick something new up! And, as a bonus, getting it at the farmer’s market will allow me to ask the seller how to pick a good one and how to prepare it! Yay!!

    P.S…..miss you!

    • Hi Heather!
Hope you had success at farmer’s market! You are so right, talking directly to the people who grow the produce is the best. They have given me so many tips and encouraged me to try different things. I hope your girls enjoy the new foods!

Thanks for stopping by! I miss you too!

I boil turnips and serve with some butter. I have never cooked them with any other vegetable. Just a note, I noticed that you were a dental hygienist. My granddaughter just started her first year of hygiene school. She is loving it. It is a great profession and you will always have work. I worked in the field of ophthalmology for 35 years. I love your blog it is very good, concise and has things that are very useful. Keep up the good work.

    • Hi Sue!
I am so glad your granddaughter likes dental hygiene school! It is a wonderful profession! Thanks so much for your kind comments. Have a good weekend!
