Hours before an appetizer dinner with friends and our young children, I was in gear to create a little something for the children! A few moments of thought….Reindeer Food….simple…and everything I needed, I had on hand in my pantry and on my craft shelves (a.k.a. kitchen wine cubbies)! I gathered: oatmeal, glitter, ice-cream sprinkles, Ziploc baggies, and these free printable tags from The TomKat Studio. Tape…and we were all set to create….various aged children gathered…seven…five…. four…three….and a one year old who ate the ice-cream sprinkles…

December 2013 019As we all worked side by side to create our individually baggies of Reindeer Food, my teacher powers were still working! We discussed each instruction carefully. First, open your baggie. Second, let’s add in the oatmeal. Taste it. What does it taste like!?! Do you think Rudolph and the other reindeer will enjoy it. Questioning children as they work on a project deepens their understanding.

December 2013 022The activity of creating personalized baggies of Reindeer Food continued—and then the children were ALL ready to move outside! Imagine that!?! Seventy degree weather in West Tennessee in December invited out the adults too. However, since the reindeer food isn’t being sprinkled on the lawn until Christmas Eve we’ll take advantage of a writing opportunity.

At home with our own reindeer bag, my daughter (age 5.5) and I (Litsa) will discuss the sequential order of creating the reindeer food. We’ll discuss what we’ll do with it and what might happen (analyzing and predicting) when the reindeer see it….imagination lights up a child’s world….As we talk, we’ll jot down a few sentences in our journal to create yet another logged entry in our writing journal.
