This summer we are traveling to California to see my family. Buying airline tickets is always a challenge! The prices of plane tickets fluctuate greatly. I have shared with you before my tips for getting a good deal on airline tickets. This year I did something new though!

Last year we discovered JetBlue. We had a wonderful experience on JetBlue with direct flights to and from California. We wanted to repeat that experience this summer! Unfortunately the return flight from California was no longer a direct flight. Since we were spoiled with not having a layover, I decided to look at other options. Of course, price was my biggest concern. If it came down to it, I would take a layover instead of paying a ridiculous amount for a direct flight.

After two weeks of researching the best deal, it turns out buying two one way tickets was cheaper than buying a round trip ticket. Plus, we were able to get direct flights both ways!

This is what I ended up with:

Direct flight on JetBlue from Washington DC to California for $169.

Direct flight on American Airlines from California to Washington DR for $179.

That makes it $348 round trip which is the best price I have seen lately – especially for summer travel season. Now, we are flying two different airlines and we do have to take into consideration that American Airlines will charge for checked luggage. However, even with the luggage fees, it is cheaper than buying a round trip ticket.

So, research, research, research! Think outside the box with your airline ticket purchases.
