Basil Basics | August Superfood

basil

One of August’s superfoods is basil. This garnish is spicy and licorice-like but a surprising source of vitamin K, which is crucial for strong, healthy bones. It is packed with flavonoids that can lower your risk for certain cancers and it can keep your blood sugar in check.

So if basil is this SUPER, let’s serve it up at every opportunity. If you have a basil plant at home, you’ll want to follow Renae’s tips on using & storing basil. Or maybe you’re just getting started with a starter plant of basil this year (like me)!?!

Wherever you are on basil basics, you just need to get started experimenting with using basil whether you’re growing it and/or just buying it to add to your homemade dishes. Toss handfuls of basil into your red sauce or try basil in smoothies. Add it on top of garden tomatoes or use your food processor to create basil bean spreads!

Now that I’ve finished my last bowl of Edamame Succotash that was infused with basil, I think I need to savor yet another basil dish—and I think a protein packed spread is cool enough for August’s little green superfood, basil.

What’s your favorite basil packed recipe?
