cucumber squash seedlings

Last weekend I planted cucumber, zucchini, yellow squash and melon seeds in starter soil. In just a few days the seedlings have sprouted! The warm greenhouse has really helped speed things along this year. Some of the produce I am attempting to grow are pickling cucumbers, lemon cucumbers, regular cucumbers, green zucchini, golden zucchini, muskmelon and crookneck yellow squash.

In the mid-atlantic region, it is still way to early to plant warm weather vegetables like cucumbers, melons, squash and peppers in the garden. However, it is a good time to start seedlings inside or in a greenhouse. Our weather has been so back and forth this year, I will wait until mid May to plant these seedlings in the garden. After temperatures in the high 80’s last week, we are back to turning on the heater this week as we barely reach 60 today. Keep in mind that many seedlings can’t take temperature fluctuations like that so it is better to plant later!

chicks feathers

In other country life news, our baby chicks are growing, growing, growing! They are starting to sprout feathers and are a lot more active. We need to work on socializing them as they are a bit skittish when we open the door. Just like the plants, we have to keep a close eye on the outdoor temperature and adjust the heating lamp.

Have you started seedlings? How about baby chicks? I would love to hear your stories!
