Daddy Daycare: Bug Brigade

We are being invaded by Japanese Beetles! Every summer these beetles seem to make their way to our yard wreaking havoc on our fruit trees and plants. Sunday I noticed these pests on our sweet peas in the garden. That was it, I had to call in the bug brigade!

Our “bug brigade” consists of Capt. M, Mr B., Hubby, and Five Chickens. The weapon of choice for the men is soapy water and for the chickens… well they just eat ’em! In fact the chickens LOVE Japanese Beetles. Just gently shake the branch of an infected tree and the hens come running. Every evening, the boys set out to “debug” the fruit trees, blackberries and sweet peas. Of course they can’t keep up with them all, but the boys and hens do a fine job of keeping the numbers down.

The best removal technique is to hold the tub of soapy water under the beetles.Tap the leaves or branch and the beetles fall right into the water. They can’t get out once they are submerged and they die a few minutes later.

Have you noticed Japanese beetles on your foliage?

Hubby is currently a stay at home dad to our two boys. Capt. M is 5 and in Kindergarten and Mr. B is 3 and loves staying home with daddy all day. Join us as we chronicle our journey adjusting to daddy daycare.
