Crosword puzzle

For my oldest son, reading has been a challenge. Capt. M is entering the third grade and reading books has never interested him. He struggles with sounding out words even though he has worked really hard to stay on grade level. We have discovered that there other ways to encourage reading other than books!

Capt. M discovered crossword puzzles a few days ago. He likes the trivia involved. Not only does he have to read the clue, he is also getting practice spelling words. After we sat there for a few minutes working on the puzzle together, I mentioned to him “do you realize this counts as reading?” It was like a light-bulb went off for the both of us!

We also encourage Capt. M to read signs and worlds on the television. Even video games have words or instructions. Of course he is still required to read books – but we try to encourage reading in more fun ways too.

If you have a child struggling with reading, try games! Crossword puzzles and word searches are great and portable! There are age appropriate crossword books available on Amazon for about $5.
