Gardening: Seedlings & Seed Leaves

A week ago I finally got around to starting some of my warm weather seeds such as cucumbers, tomatoes and squash. The cucumber ans squash seedlings emerge really quickly. The tomatoes, herbs and peppers are a little slower to germinate. Once the seedlings emerge, make sure to remove the greenhouse top if you have had the seeds covered.

Seedlings need a lot of sunlight and the soil needs to stay moist. Since I am using the peat pellets, I have to water them daily. They dry out quickly in the warm window box.

The first leaves to emerge are called seed leaves. Thus that’s why they are called seedlings! The seed leaves are not true leaves. It is important to know the difference between a seed leaf and a true leaf so you know when to transplant. A seedling is very week when it only has seed leaves. Transplanting will not work well at this point. True leaves are what bring the nutrients to the plant.

How is your garden growing? Are your seedlings coming up?
