One item that I packed for my four year old’s summer entertainment last summer was Highlights My First Hidden Pictures. My little learner has enjoyed sitting next to me as she searched for hidden pictures and discussed the silliness of where the hidden pictures are located. Her Highlights booklet notated:

Why Hidden Pictures?

“My First Hidden Pictures (ages 2-6) has been created by the editors of Highlights to give very young children easy access to this popular & enduring activity. Each puzzle is designed to grab & hold their attention, and the number and placement of hidden objects have been carefully considered to enhance their success.

Solving Hidden Pictures puzzles challenges them to observe closely & note details as they hunt for objects embedded in a picture. Searching for hidden objects develops a child’s concentration & attention to detail while reinforcing good work habits. The clues themselves provide an illustrated word list for children as they start to learn to read.”

As a parent of a toddler and as an elementary educator, I’ll have to agree that these books are captivating of my toddler’s attention in small increments of time (30 minute sessions) and truly reinforce good work habits (with the help of an adult’s directions; i.e. how to carefully circle the hidden picture and x out the picture found, etc.). My toddler has enjoyed using the stickers to place on top of the hidden pictures——-her favorite tactile part of these activities, stickers. Additionally, we’ve worked on learning beginning sounds of words and calling out each “Capital & lowercase letter” of the titles of the pages within her book. Each puzzle/page has provided her with ample learning opportunities as I’ve sat next to her decoding words or discussing the activity/illustrations. I’ve downloaded Highlights Hidden Pictures App on her iPad and am eager to see her concentration of the activities on her tablet versus her paper booklet. These Hidden Pictures activities are not only available for ages 2-6 but also for children ages 6+. Highlights encourages you to help your child(ren) discover:

Click-and-Play Hidden Pictures

“Children who enjoy the sticker puzzles in these books may also like Click-and-Play Hidden Pictures at HighlightsKids.com. They’ll find dozens of Hidden Pictures puzzles that playfully animate as they find objects and click on them. The different levels of play and the hint button make them easily accessible for younger children.”

Almost a year later, she still loves to find those hidden pictures in her Highlights booklets and on her Highlights iPad app! We’ll pack them for this summer’s vacations too!
