hardening seedlings

Now that our seedlings have their true leaves, we need to start the hardening off process. Seedlings need to be acclimated to life outside the greenhouse. These tender plants don’t do well go directly from a warm greenhouse to withstanding rain, wind and harsh sun. Therefore about a week before the transplant date, the acclimation takes place in a simple process known as hardening off.

To start the hardening off process, place the seedlings outside in a shaded area. Let them stay outside for a couple of hours each day. Make sure that the seedlings are not in the direct sun and that they are protected from wind for the first couple of days. Gradually expose the seedlings to more sun as the week goes by. Remember to bring the seedlings back inside for the night.

After a week of gradually exposing the seedlings to outdoor life, they should be ready for transplantation. When you decide to transplant the seedlings, it is best to do it on a cool cloudy day if possible.
