The Holiday season is coming up quickly and the scramble for gifts has begun. In this economy I know there are many families that can’t afford new toys for their children this year. There is a way to score gifts without spending a penny though!

Consider holding a toy swap with friends and family. Many children have toys that they no longer use. Swapping toys is a great way to recycle and get new to you toys. Most young children do not know the difference between a new or used toy. In fact, my boys have liked gifts from yard sales or swaps more than the ones I have bought brand new!

How to host a toy swap:

  • Create interest among your friends and family. A mom’s group would be a perfect place to put the idea into motion.
  • Set a date and location for the swap. Give parents enough time to gather and clean toys.
  • Everyone does not have to bring an equal amount of items to participate. Most of the time there are more items brought than taken home so arrange for leftover items. A local charity might be able to come by and pick up the unwanted items.
  • Make sure that everyone knows to only bring toys that are in good condition.
  • On the day of the swap, have participants sort items into categories. It’s easier to “shop” if the toys are sorted.
  • The only rule of the swap is- the person that picks up the item first has first dibs. I have been to several swaps and never had an issue with fighting over items.

A swap can be done for other items too. Clothes, home decor and books are all great to swap with one another. Remember it is not how much you spend on a gift, it is always the thought that counts!
