Stake Up Tomato Plant

This heat is making my tomato plants grow like crazy! I planted a lot of tomatoes this year so that I can make homemade spaghetti sauce. Tomato baskets are expensive so I decided to go the cheaper route and use stakes.

To tie the tomato plant to the stake I used old nylons. You want to use something that has a little give so the support stretches when the plant grows. Nylons are the perfect solution and they were free! I have a drawer full of old nylons that were perfect for this project. I also used wood and metal stakes that we had on hand.

When staking up your tomato plants, don’t tie them too tight. You don’t want to damage the stem. If you don’t have nylons try a strips of cloth or nursery tape.
