I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Internet safety is a huge concern of mine and many parents. June happens to be National Internet Safety Month! Of course my boys are years away from having social media accounts. However they do use some learning websites online on occasion. Since my boys are only five and six, they are fully supervised while online.

For the tween and teen group, I know the concerns for internet safety grow. I have teens being downright bullies online. It seems that things are typed that would never be said when face to face with someone. Somehow the keyboard brings “bravery” in words. This is not a good thing in my opinion.

The other problem I see is the posting of inappropriate pictures. I have been shocked to see young girls posting pictures of themselves barely clothed on facebook. And I am talking young girls! Is anyone monitoring their accounts? It’s disheartening.

Are you a Cyber Smart Parent?

Well you can test your knowledge with a free Cyber Quiz from the Boys & Girls Club of America. It’s a short 7 question quiz that will give you some insight on cyber safety. I was surprised by the suggestion of googling your child’s name- I had not thought of that!

The Cyber Safe Futures website also offers great information Cyber Bullying, Mobile Smarts, Social Networking and Online Privacy. It’s important to keep an open line of communication with your child about internet safety. I know kids think they know everything, but they truly don’t understand the possible problems that can occur with inappropriate internet use! And honestly, some adults need to brush up on their cyber safety too!
