Life With Boys: Smarter Than The Book

Last night Capt. M and I were reading before bed. He picked out the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We have a routine- he reads one page and I read the next.

Towards the end of the book I read the line about the caterpillar making a cocoon.

Capt. M says “Mom, why are you saying cocoon? It’s turning into a butterfly. Butterflies make a chrysalis. It’s not a moth. Moth’s make cocoons.”

I sat there for a moment in awe of my 6 year old! How did he get so smart?

I explained that the book was written with the word cocoon and I was not sure why. Of course google would know! Sure enough, the author Eric Carle explains why he used cocoon rather than chrysalis. Really it just comes down to poetry over science.

I am so proud of my little man! I will continue to encourage him to question what he reads. A valuable lesson for the both of us, just because it is written doesn’t mean that it is correct- even if it is a beloved children’s story.
