So you all know that I am passionate about oral health care. As a Registered Dental Hygienist, I am exposed to teeth every single day. I can tell you that the majority of children do not care for their teeth properly (not to mention adults don’t either!). Some of it is lack of education and the other part is stubbornness. How many of you remember telling your parent’s that you brushed when all you did was wet the toothbrush bristles? Yep, I did that too!

My goal is a dental health care professional is to give children the tools they need to obtain a healthy mouth. Of course I pass this information onto my own kids as well. But they are just like any other child and they like to give their momma a hard time about brushing!

Did you Know?

  • 44% of American kids will suffer from pediatric dental disease before they reach kindergarten
  • Of the 4 million kids born each year, more than half will have cavities by the time they reach 2nd grade
  • 43% of Americans lack dental insurance
  • All in all, 16 million kids suffer from untreated dental disease

So, it’s important that we be good examples for our kids and teach them good dental habits. My family and I have been asked to do the Listerine Smart Rinse Sweet Smart Challenge. That means that we will be brushing two times a day, rinsing two times a day and flossing. No it’s not good enough to just brush two times a day! Believe me, brushing alone just doesn’t cut it. A toothbrush can’t reach between the teeth where a majority of the plaque and food reside.

We will be using Listerine Smart Rinse with Fluoride, Reach Floss and Reach toothbrushes. I will mark down on this little chart each time we complete our task. Doing this for three weeks should help us form a healthy routine.

I also wanted to mention America’s Tooth Fairy to you. This is a non-profit organization that is focused on reducing preventable children’s dental disease. If you would like to help children who are suffering from cavities and can’t afford the needed treatment, you can check out the fundraising efforts for Trick or Treat for America’s Tooth Fairy.

If you want to join me and my family in the Listerine Sweet Smart Challenge, here is a $1 off Listerine Kid’s Rinse or Reach Kids product coupon.
