USA Swimming: Swim Lessons + Olympic Trial Info #SwimToday

One of the most important activities my boys are taking part in this summer are swim lessons. Hubby and I feel strongly that our boys need to be good swimmers. They have never shown fear of water which makes us a little nervous! It only takes a second for a child to slip quietly under the water. Swim lessons can help a child avoid a potential water accident.

Our boys are in week number three of swim lessons and we are so proud of them! Capt. M, age 5, was allowed to swim in the “big” lane yesterday with the kids on the swim team. He did the backstroke with fins on and made it halfway down the length of the pool before popping up for a break. Mr. B, age 4, is now comfortable with going under water and holding his breath. Getting the breathing down is one of the most important parts of swimming.

Last week I had the privilege of being on a conference call with the wonderful ladies behind USA Swimming, including Olympic medalists Lindsay Mintenko and Emily Silver! One of the things I found most interesting during the conversation is that USA Swimming is against the use of flotation devices (like arm floaties) for kids. The floats give kids a false sense of security. The best thing is to get your children involved in swim lessons with a professional instructor at a young age. You can search for a local swim club by entering your zipcode over at USA Swimming Find a Local Club page. Some clubs also participate in Make a Splash charitable program that offers free swimming lessons for those that can’t afford them.

I am so excited about the Summer Olympics this year! I can’t wait to watch the swimmers in action with my boys. Make sure you tune into NBC for the U.S. Olympic Team Trial for the swim team from June 25th until July 2nd, 2012. To support the athletes make sure you follow them on twitter at @USA_Swimming and follow the hashtag #SwimToday.
