Since it is Earth Day I thought it would be fun to do a craft based on recycling. Mr. B came home from the babysitter’s house with a cute little woven paper basket. When my parents were visiting they picked up several maps and tourist brochures. Instead of throwing out the brochures, we made baskets!
What you need:
Thick paper- glossy, colorful brochures work great
Tape
Scissors
Take the paper and cut it into a shape of a large cross. You want all of the sides to be about the same size.
Fold the flaps in half and then cut strips. You do not want to cut through the whole flap.
Basically, you want to make loops leaving the top edge in tact. Cut loops on all four flaps.
Fold each flap in so that the middle makes a square- the base of the basket. Place a piece of tape on each of the corners taping the sides of the basket together. Then take a long strip of paper and start weaving in and out of the flaps.
Weave a second strip of paper in an alternate pattern for the bottom row.
Tape any loose ends. Take another long strip of paper and tape on a handle.
The great thing about this project is that if you mess up, you are out virtually no money! It took me awhile to figure out the best way to do this project as I just looked at Mr. B’s basket and went by trial and error. Thus, it is a bit difficult to write out this tutorial and make it understandable! Anyways, give it a try- if it doesn’t come out great, try it again making adjustments!
