Pomelo

This week for Try Something New, Litsa is sharing her experience with a Pomelo! I will have to look for one of these as I have never tried one!

This past week for Thanksgiving, my brother Sokratis and his family visited from Atlanta. I knew to have fruit in the refrigerator because he’s such a fruit fanatic. I had clementines, pomegranates, grapefruit, bananas, and blueberries on hand. I wasn’t surprised though when he walked in with more fruit—mangos and a pomelo! I believe that the first time tried a mango was at Sokratis’s home but a pomelo—never! The pomelo was so large, round, and green that it sparked my curiosity!

Pomelos are round like a grapefruit. However, they are larger than a grapefruit and a species in their own right, not a hybrid. The pomelo does resemble the grapefruit’s texture and delicate pink segments (although they can be found to have white segments which are slightly more acidic). They have high nutritional value and satisfy a sweet tooth! Pomelos are citrus fruits that are an excellent source of vitamin C. They also contain potassium and folic acid. Note that the nutritional value varies according to the color.

I like grapefruit with sugar on it so the pomelo’s texture was familiar to me. I didn’t mind the soft, citrus skin and texture. The beauty of the pinkish/red pomelo that I tasted is that you can eat it without dousing it with sugar. It is sweeter than any grapefruit I have ever eaten! Although, I have never found a pomelo in my West Tennessee Kroger, I would buy a pamelo to eat again!

Have you tried anything new this week?
