Country Life: An Egg Hatched

Baby Chick

Last week I mentioned that we were letting out broody hen sit on two eggs. Much to my surprise, one of the eggs hatched on Saturday! Here is what went down:

I was out in the garden when I suddenly realized that it had been 21 days since we allowed Brown Town, our broody hen, to sit on fertilized chicken eggs.  The average hatching time is 21 days. So I headed to the chicken coup. In my mind, I thought there is no way that this worked. I fully expected to find Brown Town sitting on two unhatched eggs.

As I entered the coup, I heard a peep. What? No, that had to be my imagination! I gently lifted up Brown Town to see a little fuzzy chick pop out!

OH. MY. GOODNESS!

I can’t even tell you how excited I was! Yes, we have had baby chicks several times but we had always purchased them. This was the first baby born right in our coup. So very cool!

I ran to the house. And yelled, “we have a baby!” Hubby and the boys looked at me with a confused look. I couldn’t even get the words out I was so excited. “A baby chick!”

On that note, we all ran back to the coup for babies first picture!

Now we are waiting to see if egg #2 hatches. Today is day 22 and still nothing. We will wait until tomorrow to see if anything happens. Until then, we are busy researching how to care for a baby chick and it’s mama. Brown Town is a natural mother so I don’t think we will have to do much!
