Brown Town

One of our hens that we have named Brown Town, has become broody. What is a broody hen? It is a female chicken whose mothering instincts have kicked into high gear. Brown Town is sitting on eggs hoping to hatch a couple of chicks. This is the second time that Brown Town has become broody. She only leaves the nest once a day to eat and defecate. At first we were very worried about her, but after reading up on broody hens, it turns out she is just doing what comes naturally to her!

We have marked two eggs for her to sit on. There is a high chance that they are fertilized eggs since we have two roosters hanging around. However, we are not sure that these eggs will actually hatch. Brown Town is giving it a go though!

You might notice that Brown Town is looking a little shaggy too. As we head towards Fall, the hens have started to molt. This means their egg production is slowing down too. Our two new hens should continue laying though!
