I mentioned a few weeks ago that our chickens are molting. When they go through the molting process, the egg product stops. So we thought nothing of it when we were only collecting one or two eggs a day. That was until we found a nest outside of the coop full of eggs!
One of our hens was missing. We recently lost two hens to what we think was a fox attack. Hubby and I were at the coop discussing how we were going to prevent future attacks when all of the sudden the missing hen appeared. She was underneath the chicken coop! Capt. M peaked under the coop and there was a nest of 9 eggs under there. It was a rainy day so that’s why my hands and the eggs are covered in mud!
Hubby blocked off the bottom of the coop so the hens could no linger crawl under it. We hope they will go back to laying in the nesting boxes now that they can’t access their secret hideout!
As far as the eggs, eight of them were thrown away. One was salvaged because it was still hot meaning it was just laid. Since we have no clue how long the other eggs were underneath the coop, we decided to be safe and discard them. What a bummer!

I’ve been looking at photos of chicken coops online–and in books–for over a year. I really like the looks of yours, though. I’m wondering if you know what its dimensions are and if you have any additional photos of your coop? Do you have any photos of the inside of the coop?

Hi Ellen,
I will take some pictures of the inside of our chicken coop this weekend! I will have hubby do some measuring to. We made ours mostly from scraps hubby found at different construction sites (he used to do hardwood flooring). I’ll send you an email when I get the additional info!
