Country Life: New Egg Layers

brown town chicks

About a week ago our mama hen, Brown Town, started laying eggs again! I was a bit surprised that she started laying eggs since the baby chicks are just 7 weeks old. The last time she raised a chick, it took her several months for her to start laying again. So, we were not prepared for mama to lay eggs. She was still eating the chick starter food instead of the layer feed. Since the chick food can be medicated, we decided not to eat the eggs for a week. I did some research online and some people said there is not a problem with eating the eggs while others said to wait a week or so. Just to be safe, we waited.

Red pullet

And Brown Town is not the only one laying eggs! The juvenile pullets we bought back in April have started laying! We have two little pullet eggs. This was also a surprise to us since they have started laying a month earlier than any other pullets we have had.

pullet egg

It is easy to tell when a pullet starts laying eggs because they are so much smaller. The darker brown eggs are the new pullet eggs and the one in the middle is a regular egg. Such cute little eggs!

white baby chick

This is one of the baby chicks! She is almost all white with a few grey feathers here and there. This is hubby’s favorite chick since she is so unique looking! Well hopefully it is a she! Two of the juvenile pullets are looking like roosters. We are hopeful that the three baby chicks we have left are all hens.
