Try Something New: Wild Berries

We are very fortunate here in central Virginia with wild berries growing right in our yard! We have wild blackberries and blueberries and I know places near here that have wild raspberries. The blueberries are small and hard to gather since the wildlife seems to get them first. We do have a good size wild blueberry bush by our garden that we are hopeful to collect berries from this year.

It turns out that this is a very good blackberry season! We came across several huge patches of wild blackberries over the weekend. We plan to go back to these patches later this week as there were hundreds of berries that were not quite ripe yet. If I can collect enough blackberries, I will be making jam!

Take a look around your neighborhood, do you have wild berries growing? Of course always use caution if you are not familiar with berry varieties- I don’t want you picking a poison berry! Furthermore, I teach my boys that they must ask me before consuming just to make sure they are picking edible berries.

Have you tried something new this week?
