Spring is finally here on the East Coast! She took her sweet time getting here but now the temperatures have finally warmed up. The trees are blooming and allergy season is in full swing. I wanted to remind you of a few things as you venture outside this spring.

Remember the Sunscreen: The sun feels so good after that long winter. However, don’t forget the sunscreen! I burn easily so this is a good reminder for myself too!

Check for Ticks: Yes, the nasty little blood suckers are back. Remember to check yourself and your family for ticks each day. If you have outdoor pets, use a flea and tick spray to minimize tick infestations. You might remember that Mr. B had Lyme Disease two years ago. Make sure you read up on the signs and symptoms of Lyme Disease.

Keep Your Pets Cool: Hotter temperatures mean your outdoor pets need more water and they need shade. Checkout my tips for keeping your pets cool.

Keep Your House Cool: Remember to shut the shades and turn on your fans rotating the correct direction. It was 90 degrees yesterday and I REFUSE to turn on the air conditioning! The temps are supposed to dip back to the 70’s and it is not humid, so we don’t need air yet! Instead I am relying on these tips for keeping the house cool.

What are your tips for spring?

For 22 years I lived in an old farmhouse, with a husband, dogs, cats, and 2 kids. i learned a lot about staying cool in the summer.
First, get some K-9 Advantix for your dogs. Nothing beats it. And get Advantage for your cats. Do not mix these up. You will end up at the vet. Watch out for seed ticks. Don’t know what they are? Take a walk down a path that has a little bit of that soft, fine grass that’s grown up, then come back and get somebody to look at your legs in the sunlight. You will see millions of tiny black specks. These will not wash off. They must be scraped, one by one, with a fingernail.
To keep the house cool, and to stay cool when it’s hot, use the ceiling fans, and when the sun dips down use window fans.. They draw in the cooler night air. But above all, don’t cook! Do not turn on your oven! Also, do not do anything strenous! You have to just sit still and stay cool. :) Take off clothes! This is no time to worry about modesty! You do not need a bra, or slip, or (gasp) even underwear! Wear the skimpiest top and shorts you have! Drink lots! Unfortunately this does not mean alcohol. That makes you hotter. :( No, in the hot days of summer you need water, or flavored water, with lots of ice.

    • Hi Barbara,
Thank you for your tips on keeping cool in warmer weather! We use our outdoor grill a lot during the warmer months so I don’t have to turn on the oven. Unfortunately, we are very familiar with seed ticks. I plucked a couple off my boys today- yuck! Have a good weekend!
