Sydney

Our pets are like family to us! In fact I call my female dogs my little girls! Like children, pets require preventive care to live a long and healthy life. One of the most serious parasites affecting both dogs and cats is heartworm. Unfortunately heartworm disease can be deadly and is very expensive to treat.

When we lived in California, we didn’t worry about heartworm as much because it occurs at a lower rate out there. Now that we live in Virginia, our pets are at a higher risk for contracting heartworm. Our older dog, Sydney, had not been tested for heartworm in several years. We had the opportunity to get her tested at a Banfield Pet Hospital as part of her Optimal Wellness Plan. Thankfully her test results for heartworm came back negative and we were able to get her on preventive treatment. There is a heartworm preventive medication called ProHeart6 that we are trying out. This is an injectable medication that protects Sydney from heartworm for 6 months! No remembering to give her a pill each month!

To checkout the risk of heartworm in your area, checkout the interactive heartworm map. There is also a $10 off coupon for ProHeart6 available. To find out more about heartworm and how to prevent it, watch this YouTube video.

Banfield Pet Hospitals are mostly found out PetSmart locations. The staff at our Banfield location was awesome! They were very kind and informative. Sydney is enrolled in the Optimal Wellness Plan where she can get free exams for the year. She will also receive all of her yearly vaccines. Since she is a senior dog, we will at least be at Banfield twice a year for her checkups.

I love that Banfield Pet Hospitals have extended and weekend hours. It make staking your pet to the vet easy! You can also request a Banfield appointment online. The room our Sydney was in was very clean and neat. She had a great experience even though she hates going to the vet!

  21. We have used preventive heartworm medication in the past, although have gotten off it in the past year (by accident). I’ve been wanting to get my dog checked up on again, so that she can get a new batch of the medication. Thanks!
