Did you know that there is such a thing as Olive Oil Tasting? It’s just like wine tasting but with olive oil. You see all olive oils are not created equal. Carapelli Olive Oil is Italy’s number one Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It’s made from 100% Mediterranean olives.

I was sent a bottle of Carapelli Premium 100% Italian Olive Oil to try and conduct a taste test. I was a little leary at first since I have never drank straight olive oil before. However, I do like bread dipped in olive oil and I figured it shouldn’t be much different.

Four S’s of Olive Oil Tasting – Swirl, Sniff, Slurp and Swallow

1. Swirl – By swirling the olive oil in your glass, you release the oil’s esters, which are the molecules that
contain the aroma.
2. Sniff – Now inhale deeply. The aroma is the key to the fruitiness of the oil. Is it intense or is it
more subtle?
3. Slurp – Sip the oil while “sipping” in a bit of air. This slurping action emulsifies the oil and helps spread it
throughout your mouth. Take note of the various tastes and sensations. Is it fruity, peppery, smooth?
4. Swallow – Once you swallow the oil, it should leave your mouth with no aftertaste. Again, take note of
any peppery or stinging sensation in your throat.

Just for fun I grabbed my bottle of olive oil which is a much cheaper brand than Carapelli. After swirling each in separate glasses I compared the aroma. Carapelli had a much more intense aroma. It was almost like there were fresh olives! The cheaper brand had hardly any aroma. Both oils were pretty smooth in the mouth but Carapelli had a peppery taste in my throat. Really there was no aftertaste- which I was surprised by!

Thank you for the coupon! I’d like to try this olive oil too. Being from Greece and traveling there often, I knew that there were differences in olive oils and the way they make your food taste!! My aunt by far has the best olive oil around! I’m not sure that I know what it is because when I’m eating at her house (too far from mine), the flavors are so rich that I’m too busy eating to stop and ask! I’ve called my mom many times to ask what she might use but I have never received my answer! In my aunt’s village in Greece, they grow the best olives! Thus, not only is her olive oil the best but the olives are delectable! Only the pits remain when they are served!! Thus, I think the secret is that she brings her olive oil all the way home from her summer vacations in Greece! She’s definately getting the first press! Can’t wait to try Carapelli’s Olive Oil and see how it compares!
