One of the things that many healthy eaters worry about is fat content in food. It’s important to understand that there are good fats and bad fats. Publix’s FamilyStyle untangles the myths/facts about how much fat our bodies need. So we’ve all heard the……..

Myth: You should eat as little FAT as possible.

FACT: But in fact, when we skimp too much on fat, we overdo carbohydrates, especially the refined kind (think sugar and white flour), which can raise triglycerides and increase heart disease risk. If we eat too much fat, we are more likely to go overboard on calories and cholesterol-raising saturated fat.

So where’s the balance!?!

The best target for fat is 20 to 35 percent of daily calories. The fat type is important too. Smart picks include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from plant sources such as nuts and avocados, as well as omega-3-rich oily fish. Opt for lean meats and low-fat dairy products to keep saturated fat intake-low.

You’ll want to trade deep fried fish for grilled or baked varieties. You can choose guacamole instead of French onion dip and healthy dried fruit-nut-bars instead of packaged chocolate chip cookies. Choosing fat options that energize the body is key to keeping your body moving in the right direction.

Don’t avoid fat altogether. Know how to choose the right fats for your body—a little food knowledge keeps you fit!
