Garden Update: Tomato Battle & Pepper Overload

We were on vacation for 12 days and the first thing we checked when we arrived home was the garden! Everything looked really good thanks to a drip system we installed before we left. The only problem is that the weeds grew really well too! Please excuse all of the weeds in the pictures- it’s a mess!

The cabbage is doing very well after having an early battle with cabbage worms. You can see the outer leaves have holes but the new growth is perfect!

I was SO excited to see our first pumpkin on the vine! I planted pie pumpkin seeds about 7 weeks ago. I am hopeful that more pumpkins will show up soon.

We have peppers galore! From mild to hot, we got ’em. We have several varieties of bell peppers- golden, red, yellow and green.

The banana peppers are going crazy. Hubby and I are on a big banana pepper kick- adding them to burgers and sandwiches. I need to get some pickling salt to can pepper rings!

The hot peppers are close to being ready and I had hopes of making salsa. But...

We are in a tomato battle. The squirrels are eating our tomatoes right off the vine. The tomatoes are not even ripe yet when the squirrels start chewing on them. We have lost at least eight very large tomatoes this week and it make me sick. We will now harvest the tomatoes when they are just starting to ripen and place them in a window. Otherwise, I am afraid we will not get any tomatoes this summer.

Anyone have any tips for deterring squirrels? An no, we don’t have a gun!

I’ve been told squirrels eat the tomatoes for the water. If they have another water source they should leave them alone.
