How to Save on New Tires

We recently had to buy new tires for hubby’s vehicle. Let me just say that tires are expensive! As we head into winter we wanted to make certain that the tires were in good shape. Hubby did some shopping around for the best price on tires. These are his tips for saving on tires.

Tips for saving on tires:

  • The first step is to write down the tire needed for your vehicle. You can find the tire size and information on the tire that is currently on your vehicle.
  • Start calling places to price out the tires that fit your vehicle.
  • In addition to asking about the tire price, ask about the cost of balancing and alignment. Will they do a free inspection to assess whether your vehicle needs an alignment? To assess the need for alignment yourself, check the wear pattern on your tires. If you see that they are wearing at different rates you could need an alignment.
  • Ask about any additional fees such as tire disposal.
  • Ask about the warranty on the tires they are offering.

Hubby called four different tire shops in our area for price comparison and he made sure to ask all of the above questions. The quotes varied as much as $25 per tire- that’s $100!

I was glad hubby handled this as I would have just pulled up to the nearest tire shop. It pays to do your research though!

  1. Shop in person, and get written quotes of tire models, warranty, etc, with the final all-inclusive price. Go to each place with your list of quotes and details and get them to match or beat price. Go to the place you want to purchase from first, and then again LAST. Take all the price quotes and ask them to match the lowest. I recently got a national chain (GY) to come down $200 from their first price just by showing my research. And the low price they beat wasn’t even the same tire, just one with a similar mile rating. I’m not talking expensive tires either, final price of $500 for all four tires. More expensive tires should yield bigger savings with a little leg work.

    • Good suggestions! The reason we did not go in person is because we live in the middle of nowhere. The tire shops are all spread out from 30-45 minutes apart. It would have been way too much running around for us- thus the calls. We paid $598 for 4 tires for an SUV type vehicle which included balancing, alignment and all fees.
