Life With Boys: Cherish Them

Life is not fair.

I am dealing with an internal battle of emotions as one of my patient’s daughters battles cancer. This sweet little girl has been fighting osteosarcoma for 15 months. I will never understand why kids have to deal with such dreaded disease, pain and suffering. Last week this girl was all set to celebrate the end of her 14 months of chemotherapy. That day turned into their worst nightmare as her Dr. was concerned about a re-occurrence. Even writing that statement brings a hard lump to my throat.

So, as I set out to celebrate Mr. B’s 4th birthday, this family was dealing with fear, grief and the unknown. After I read their Caring Bridge journal on Saturday, I headed to take a shower. The shower is the only peaceful place in the house when the boys are awake! With the water streaming on the hottest setting I stood there with chills paralyzed in prayer and thought. My mommy emotions took over- she’s just a child- this is not fair!

Why?

I have become so emotionally invested in this family, following their story for over a year now, that I felt guilty for celebrating with my children. I soooo hope and pray that this family will have much to celebrate one day.

I did pull myself together and go about the day with fun activities with my boys. But my thoughts and prayers were never far from this 10 year old girl and her family. I wish I could ease their pain but there are no words or actions that will do that- just a miracle.

She needs a Miracle.

And unfortunately, there are too many families in this world dealing with similar circumstances.

Make sure you cherish every moment with your children. Hug them, love them, give them your undivided attention, celebrate, kiss them goodnight, talk with them, play together- just be there as much as possible. We never know what the future holds.

My prayers are with this sweet family today as they should be getting the results- please be a miracle!
