Strawberry Thief Caught In The Act

For two years now we have had a strawberry thief on our hands. I watch the berries as they start to ripen and make a mental note to check them the next day. Apparently something else also makes this mental note.

This year I moved the strawberry plants into pots close to the house. My suspicion has always been squirrels. I figured with the berries close to the house and the dogs, the squirrels would stay away. Alas, the strawberries were missing again this year.

And today I finally caught the thief red handed!

Clemens Strawberry Plants

Or I guess I should say I caught him red mouthed- no hands were used!

Clemens Eating Strawberry

Yes, that’s our dog Clemens snacking on a beautiful ripe strawberry! At least he has good taste, I guess. And patience to let them ripen.

What to do with the strawberry thief dog?

  1. Jeannie says:

My husband said “Hang ’em high”! (Not the dog…the strawberries!) :-)

    • Good idea Jeannie! Now I just need a place to hang ’em- not the dog- just he berries! Thanks for the laugh!

  2. That is funny. I had that problem with my tomatoes last year. The dogs found them, and they would also wait until they were ripe and then eat them.

    • Hi Ronda!
Well, at least the dogs have good taste! Hope you get some tomatoes this year!

  3. Sneaky little guy! I wish that I had an answer to your dillema, but I am having the same problem at our house. My dog Winston has eaten all but one of our lettuce and he is trying hard to finish the job. Both dogs are starting to get real interested in the tomatoes that are starting to ripen. Funny how they know to wait for them to ripen!

    • Oh no Angela! Not the tomatoes too! I am glad the rest of our garden is fenced in or I am sure my Clemens would help himself! good luck!
