When you are stressed do you head into the kitchen scrambling for something to EAT!?! Or do you just perch yourself right by the kitchen island raiding anything that is in reach to consume!?! I’m a stress eater (Litsa). Sometimes that’s a perk when you are eating clean—there’s not as much guilt when you consume veggies and fruit. IF the junk is not there to eat when you are stressed, you can just fight off a little stress with something healthy!?! Makes me feel better—and not more stressed because I ate all the wrong foods!?! But then I read, “Eat THIS when you’re stressed!” in Redbook this month—and chocolate was on the list!?! Yes. Chocolate. So here’s their scoop:

Chocolate: It can bring your blood pressure down and keep the stress hormone cortisol from spiking when you start to feel tense—go for the dark stuff that’s at least 70% Cacoa and keep your portion size to an ounce (Opps! Three dark chocolate truffles doesn’t sound like an ounce!?! And it’s only 9:45 a.m.)!

Cashews: All nuts pack calm-inducing magnesium but cashews have the most. They’re high in calories, so a handful is all you need.

Whole-wheat bread with preserves: The carbs in both give you a quick energy hit and help your brain pump out the feel-good hormone serotonin. The bread’s fiber keeps your blood sugar from spiking too fast.

Is your pantry fueled for the fire or are you quickly scribbling chocolate, cashews and whole wheat bread to your grocery list?

Have a stress free holiday this season filled with gratitude!
