When Did Your Kids Stop Napping?

Sleep is something that we battle in my household on a daily basis. Capt. M is 4.5 years old and is finally going to bed without a fight. Mr. B will be 3 in May and we have a bedtime battle almost every night. Mr. B is also starting to resist napping. Some days he naps no problem and others he sits there and plays.

Capt. M stopped napping at age 3. If he napped he would stay up very late- 9 or 10 pm most nights. When we cut the naps we started putting him to bed at 7 or 7:30 pm. Although he went to bed better, we had to speed through dinner and baths.

It’s a catch-22:

No nap= better night sleep but possible cranky afternoons and a hurried nighttime routine.

Nap= bedtime battle and mommy falling asleep before the kiddos!

So here we are again with the early bedtime since Mr. B is starting to resist naps.

I know that all kids are different- but what age did your kids stop napping? By the way, isn’t that puppy adorable?

  1. Yes, adorable puppy. The 3 year old sometimes naps, sometimes doesn’t. He goes to bed at 8 p.m. whether he naps or not and is ok with that.
The one year old usually still naps 2 times a day but if he misses his afternoon nap is falls asleep during dinner and is out for the night. We do bath time during the day so we don’t have to do it in bedtime routine. Works out so much better for us.

  2. Awww cute puppy!

Sonny-boy was never a great nap taker… as a matter of fact he wasn’t that wonderful a sleeper until he turned 15 or so. He also suffers from insomnia, so for him sleeping is truly feast or famine… he can sleep for 12+ hours, or not sleep at all.

Sorry I am of no help. Good luck Renae!

    • Ann,
15? Oh, my hopes of a good nights sleep in one or two years just went down the drain! My oldest does not require much sleep at all. He has a hard time shutting his brain off- always thinking! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. My 4year old only takes a nap if I sleep beside him, which means I also get a nap time. He wakes up when he feels that I’m not beside him. If he don’t get one he’ll be cranky or hyper or both, so there’s no choice for me. At night he goes to bed at 9pm.

    • Keiko,
Yes, my kids like me to sleep with them too when they do nap. Although I love naps, it is also a nice time to get stuff done without a little one attached to my leg! Looks like my days for napping are limited though- my little guy has refused naps the last two days. Thanks for your input!

  1. […] Sleep issues are nothing new in our household. If any of you follow How to Have it All on facebook you already know that my 4 year old, Capt. M, has been dealing with nightmares. A few nights ago he woke up crying, sweating and shaking from a nightmare. It took over an hour to calm him down and get him back to sleep. The next morning he told me all about his dream- monsters were everywhere. […]
