Last weekend my boys and I had our green belt test for Shotokan karate. We have been practicing karate for a year now and this was our second belt test. I couldn’t be more proud of my boys! The belt test lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes this time. It required complete concentration which is hard for Mr. B at the age of 6. It’s so hard for him not to fidget and move around!
Our test consisted of performing different blocks, punches and kicks with proper technique, speed and power. We then performed our katas which is a series of forms (almost like a dance routine). If anyone makes a mistake, the whole group has to do pushups. We ended up completing 175 pushups! Even I messed up at one point causing the whole group to do 10 pushups!
These tests are challenging but for a good reason. We can honestly say that we earned these belts. Some kids were pushed out of their comfort zone, having to perform under pressure. But the greatest thing was seeing them pull through and complete the task.
After one year of karate, I am completely in love with it! Here is what I wrote on personal facebook page and it sums up my feelings:
One year ago I timidly walked into Lake Monticello Karate Academy for my first karate class. My longtime trainer had challenged me to take a karate class to work on my fluidity. My intention was to take just a few classes. I was so nervous that first class that I had to fight back tears! This was WAY out of my comfort zone. Little did I know that I would fall in love with not only karate but the super supportive dojo family. The instructors, kids and parents have all been wonderful. That little challenge has been a life changer for me and my boys. At this point, I can’t get enough of karate! Shihan, you are stuck with me for the long haul!
What I would say to all of you is challenge yourself in life. Step out of your comfort zone. Be different. Take a dare. Try something new. As Nike says, “Just Do It”! You never know where that road will lead you!
This is going to be an exciting karate year for me and my boys! Capt. M and I have already competed in tournaments with outstanding results. Mr. B is still contemplating the competition route, but he enjoys class none the less.
