Try Something New: Matcha

Matcha

After trying out Ashley’s The Perfectea Maker this past winter and receiving emails from Teavana to come in to sample their fresh teas, I was eager to bring home additional new tea products to try.

Four restaurant sized tea stations were set up in our Memphis Teavana store in West Tennessee, I sampled and sampled teas coming back to the oolong teas infused with ginger and cloves. Thus, I surprised even myself when I walked out with the little green MATCHA tin!?!

Teavana’s website denotes, “Since the 12th Century, this green tea has been used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony ‘chado’, known as the ‘Way of Tea’. The entire leaf is delicately ground into a silky smooth, chartreuse colored powder. With naturally occurring vitamin C, potassium, iron, and fiber, this is a wonderful alternative to a morning cup of coffee.” It is also described as being a, “Smooth, complex vegetal flavor with a full palette and a silky finish!”

I think I would have to agree. It is smooth. The flavor is mild but truly has a silky finish. I used just a mini spoon’s edge to add Matcha to my cup of water. The first cup I flavored with Teavana’s rock sugar but my second cup is going down without any sweetening-flavorings (however, I added less matcha to my mug for my second cup of this green tea). I do believe that it would pair well with honey too. I love the relaxing state of mind that it has given me.

As for caffeine!?!

41+ mg

Maybe I shouldn’t be drinking it at night but I was mesmerized by the little poof of smoke that climbed out of the little tin can when I pulled the aluminum tin tab back to expose the powdery matcha—

The sales clerk suggested drinking it alone, adding a touch to smoothies, and/or a bit to your morning coffee. No matter how you decide to factor in green tea’s richness to your life, drink green….

Green TEA!?!

….or MATCHA, the green tea that uses the entire leaf!
